The rainbow trout is one of the most overlooked fish species used in pond management, primarily because they can’t tolerate the warm waters of a Southern summer! They can, however, thrive in Southern ponds and lakes from November through mid-May. Stocking your lake with rainbow trout heats up your fishing in the wintertime when your bass and bluegill are slowing down and nothing seems to bite.
Rainbow trout possess a lot of traits that make them ideal for any lake or pond. They’re eager and aggressive feeders and will eat just about any kind of bait or lure all winter long. Once they’re hooked, they put up a great fight! They love leaping out of the water in dramatic displays.
They grow very quickly when fed a high protein artificial food—their conversion rates can be as close as 1:1 (meaning that each pound of feed they eat equals a pound gained in body weight) on this kind of diet. They also provide great benefits to your existing bass population—they’re torpedo-shaped and high in protein, making them an ideal meal for largemouth bass. When the weather starts to heat up again and your rainbow trout become lethargic, they make easy prey for your bass.
We keep our rainbow trout in specially designed aerated tanks filled with cold water during transportation. Once at the site, we start adding some of your lake water into the tanks to get them acclimated. These fish love cold water, so we’ll check your lake’s temperature and oxygen levels to make sure they’ll be happy, healthy, and thriving there. Once they’re adjusted to your lake water, we’ll toss them in—which is actually better for them than laying them in!
We recommend setting up an automatic feeder for your lake, filled with high protein food for your rainbow trout. Not only does this ensure they’re getting all the food they need, when they need it, but it also trains them to come up whenever food is sprinkled over the water—which means you can feed them, and then start reeling them in whenever you want.
Don’t wait all winter to get back to what you love! If you want to perk up the fishing in your pond or lake this fall and winter, consider stocking your lake with rainbow trout and fish all year round. Give Alabama Aquarium & Pond Services a call, and we’ll handle everything.
